11 10. Mixing with a human in the room
You’ll have: a balanced mix — levels, pans, sends, a glue compressor and a limiter on the master — arrived at with you: you set the drums and bass by ear, Claude balances the rest around them and tells you every time you change something.
11.1 Say
Watch the mixer. I’m going to set the drums and bass by ear; then balance everything else around them, and tell me every time I change something.
Then do it: drag the Drums and Sub faders where they sound right.
11.2 What Claude does
Starts watching every track’s fader, waits for you, reads your moves as they happen — two fader drags arrive as two events, naming the tracks — and balances the other tracks in one pass. It watches the level meters too, briefly: four seconds of playback across eight tracks is about a hundred readings, enough to bury a fader move in, so the meters come off before it waits on your hands. Then it loads a Glue Compressor and a Limiter onto the master. When you’re done it stops watching and says so.
11.3 What you’ll see in Live
Your two faders where you put them, the rest settling around them, and three devices on the Master: the Pro-Q from lesson 6 still first, where an EQ belongs, then the Glue Compressor and the Limiter. Nothing moves that you didn’t ask about.
Ten seconds of Drop 1 with the meters running — this is what Claude is reading when it tells you what you just moved.
11.4 Check
Nudge any fader and ask “what did I just do?” Then: “stop watching” — and ask “are you still watching anything?” — no, nothing left listening. One answer will surprise you: ask for the pad’s reverb send and you’ll hear 0.2, not the 0.4 you set in lesson 6. The build clip automates that knob, so after playback it sits wherever the envelope left it — a clip’s automation wins over a value you typed. Save with ⌘S; Claude will never save for you.
Anything that deletes, removes or clears asks you first — your Set isn’t in version control. And some things exist on one track but not another: a MIDI track has no input meter, an empty one has no output meter either, and the Master has no mute, arm or solo. When Claude says a thing “isn’t available here”, that is Live’s answer, not a failure.
